  DOCUMENTARY
sleep furiously

Sleep Furiously (suggested certificate PG)

THURSDAY 20 NOVEMBER 20.15

UK / 2007 / 94 mins
Director: Gideon Koppel

Lose yourself in this completely beautiful, sublimely observed study of a small farming community in mid-Wales.

The contradiction in the film’s title says it all. Amid the calm patterns of a way of life governed by the seasons, a quiet struggle is taking place in the village against the changes caused by a declining population.

Director Koppel concentrates his camera on a handful of engaging subjects, not least his German refugee mother, and sets his rich visuals against a magnificent score by the surprising choice of electronica veteran Aphex Twin. Sleep furiously is produced by the award-winning Sutherland-based producer Margaret Matheson.

Special thanks to New Wave Films & Verve Pictures for the screening.

crawford

Crawford (suggested certificate PG)

FRIDAY 21 NOVEMBER 18.30

USA / 2008 / 74 mins
Director: David Modigliani

What happens to the 705 residents of Crawford, Texas when a certain Governor George W. Bush moves to town, just in time to set his sights on the White House?

Thrust into the spotlight as a projection of his folksy charm, this insular town becomes swamped by the press, tourists and opportunists. Then, near the start of Bush’s second term, its Main Street becomes a battleground for 20,000 impassioned anti-war protestors and counter-protestors. Invaded and abandoned, Crawford booms and busts.

An often funny, deeply human story told by unforgettable characters, Crawford illuminates Bush era America from the point of view of the President’s next-door neighbours.

Special thanks to Live Action Projects for the screening.

Screens with: Valley of the Goats

UK / 2008 / 20 mins
Director: Leon Dean

The residents of Exmoor National Park are at war over a breed of wild mountain goats that have lived in the nearby Valley of the Rocks for hundreds of years.  Can a group dedicated to the protection of this rare breed, The Friends of the Goats, save the animals from extinction?

beautiful losers

Beautiful Losers (suggested certificate 15)

SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER 18.45

USA 2008/ 90 mins
Director: Aaron Rose, Joshua Leonard /Starring: Harmony Korine, Mike Mills, Ed Templeton, Deanna Templeton

Beautiful Losers tells the unlikely yet exhilarating story of a group of maverick artists who would have a huge influence on their generation’s popular culture.

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected their alternative lifestyles, with almost no influence from the art "establishment".

Beautiful Losers focuses on the personal stories of many of these artists, including acclaimed film directors Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) and Harmony Korine (Mister Lonely), tracing their journey from the street to the world’s major galleries, film studios and advertising agencies in dazzling, heart-on-sleeve style.

Special thanks to Sidetrack Films for the screening.
